Classical guitars

Classical guitars are built under very dry circumstances in order to safeguard its durability. I build them according to the Spanish way of guitar building. This means that the neck of the guitar continues up to the resonance-box with a foot against the back blade. In order to intercept forces caused by expansion and shrinkage, the lining runs up till within the tail block. As such, one obtains a durable instrument which will stand environmental influences. I choose to place fan bracing as a variation on the Torres system. Because of these seven glued fan shaped braces and two fitting laths, one can hear the separate tones within a chord much easier. Also, they make the arches of the top blade more equal. The sides of the guitar determine the shape by the way they are bent. The shape of the guitar may change because I don't use outside moulds. I don't make it easy for myself in doing this, but I just don't think it is a good thing to have tension in het sides of a top-class guitar. However, the rear blade is put under pressure. This happens in two ways: 1. I glue three rounded cross struts on the back; 2. I vary the width of the sides. This pressure increases the bass resonance and takes care that the instument carry's the sound' as they say. I like using East Indian rosewood for the sides and back side of the guitar. It has a beautiful purple colour and it also gives a sharp contrast with the lightcoloured maple which is used in the binding. The top blade is made of the best middle European spruce (Picea sitchensis) or of red cedar. The neck of the guitar is made of broadleafed cedar wood (cedrella). This type of wood is light, easy to work on and has great strenght. I prefer ebony for the fretboard; it is durable and suits the polished frets best. The slots for the frets I saw myself so as to make sure the guitar sounds perfect in every position. The string length varies from 64, 65 to 66 cms. With the longer string length of 66 cms, the string needs to be tightened much stronger for the same pitch. As such, there is more volume and sustain. . On request, I can also make a string length of 64 cms.
